5 Best Sling Alternatives for Restaurant and Retail Scheduling Teams

5 Best Sling Alternatives for Restaurant and Retail Scheduling Teams

Sling is a genuinely good scheduling app. A generous starter plan, a clean interface, and a team newsfeed that actually gets used, plenty of small hourly teams start here for good reason. Since Toast, Inc. acquired Sling in 2022, it’s also become tightly wired into Toast POS, which is great if you’re a restaurant already running Toast.

The catch shows up the moment you need more than scheduling. No native payroll. No benefits administration. And if you’re not on Toast, or you’re not a restaurant at all, the roadmap is reasonably read as built for someone else’s business first. Here are five real alternatives worth considering, including a platform built to run scheduling, payroll, and HR from one login.

5 Best Sling Alternatives for Restaurant and Retail Scheduling Teams

  1. Netchex – Best for hourly, multi-location businesses that want scheduling, time and attendance, payroll, and HR running from one system instead of a scheduling app bolted onto a separate payroll provider.
  2. Homebase – Best for very small, single-location teams that want scheduling and hiring tools bundled together. Payroll was added later as a secondary feature.
  3. When I Work – Best for hourly teams that want strong shift-swap and availability tools. Payroll still has to be exported to a separate provider.
  4. Workstream – Best for restaurant groups whose biggest bottleneck is hiring volume, not scheduling. Built as a hiring point solution, not payroll or HR.
  5. 7shifts – Best for restaurants that want deep labor forecasting layered on top of scheduling. Payroll runs through a separate integration, not natively.

How We Evaluated These Platforms

We looked at how far each platform actually goes past scheduling: whether payroll is native or exported, whether benefits administration exists at all, how support is structured, and how well each one handles a business running more than one location. Reviewer data comes from G2 and Capterra. Competitor claims were checked against each platform’s own public site and independent reviewer commentary as of September 2026.

1. Netchex: Scheduling That Doesn’t Stop at the Schedule

Netchex was founded 20 years ago in Louisiana for the businesses that keep America running: restaurants, hotels, clinics, manufacturers, where the workforce is on the floor, not behind a desk. Scheduling and time and attendance were built as part of the same platform that runs payroll, benefits, hiring, onboarding, and performance management, not stapled together after the fact.

Netchex has been a game changer for our payroll and HR processes. Their customer service team is always available and quick to resolve any issues we run into.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Scheduling and time and attendance connect directly to payroll, no export step✗ Best fit for 50 to 5,000 employees, not a single-location micro-business
✓ Tip management and shift differentials built into the pay run✗ Implementation is guided, not an instant DIY signup
✓ In-house benefits administration with licensed support
✓ Dedicated Account Manager for every customer
✓ 90% of calls answered in under 1 minute, first-call resolution the norm
✓ 98% customer satisfaction score, #1 on G2 for service
✓ Free, project-managed implementation in about 6 weeks
✓ Recruiting, onboarding, and performance management in one login

2. Homebase: Scheduling-First, Payroll as an Add-On

Homebase started as a scheduling and time-tracking tool, and payroll was layered on top later. That order matters. Per Netchex’s own published comparison, payroll on Homebase “feels like an add-on, not the core product,” and multi-location operators have reported that scheduling and payroll don’t feel fully connected once they expand past one site.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Bundles scheduling and basic hiring tools together✗ Payroll functions as a secondary, bolted-on feature
✓ Guided setup with an assigned Implementation Specialist✗ HR and compliance depth is limited compared to a full HCM platform

3. When I Work: Strong Shift Swaps, No Native Payroll

When I Work is consistently praised for ease of use, particularly for shift swaps and availability management on a deskless, mobile-first team. What it doesn’t do is run payroll. Hours export to ADP, Paychex, Gusto, or QuickBooks, and someone still has to make sure that handoff happens correctly every pay period.

The scheduling piece works fine but it never really solved our bigger HR problems / Support runs through tickets and chat only, there’s no one to call

– G2 reviewers, 2025
StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Intuitive scheduling and team communication✗ No native payroll, hours must export to a separate provider
✓ Mobile-first design built for deskless teams✗ Support is ticket and live-chat only, no phone channel

4. Workstream: Built for Hiring Volume, Not Payroll

Workstream solves a different problem than Sling does. Its real strength is high-volume hourly hiring, text-to-apply, and candidate screening for restaurant groups that churn through applicants fast. It was never built as a payroll or full HR platform, and it doesn’t try to be.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Strong high-volume hiring and screening tools✗ Not a payroll or full HR platform
✓ Multilingual candidate support✗ Scheduling and time and attendance aren’t the core product

5. 7shifts: Deep Labor Forecasting, Payroll Still Separate

7shifts is built specifically for restaurants and leans heavily into labor forecasting layered on top of scheduling. If tracking labor percentage against sales in real time is the main problem you’re solving, it’s a serious tool for that job. Payroll runs through a separate integration rather than natively, so the same handoff issue that shows up with Sling shows up here too.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Deep labor forecasting built for restaurants✗ No native payroll, runs through a separate integration
✓ Restaurant-specific scheduling workflows✗ Built narrowly for restaurants, less suited to other hourly industries
