Your accountant just handed you a name: Cirrus Payroll. Maybe you run a five-person dental office, or you’re an S-corp owner cutting your own paycheck twice a month. Your CPA trusts them, and that referral carries real weight. But before you sign anything, it helps to know what’s actually running underneath. That’s the real question behind Netchex vs. Cirrus Payroll.
Cirrus Payroll is a Tulsa, Oklahoma firm founded in 2012 by Tyler Winn, a CPA who decided payroll was worth doing full time. It doesn’t build its own software. Cirrus runs on Payroll Relief, a platform built by AccountantsWorld, now part of IRIS Software Group, and designed for accounting firms to manage many small clients’ payroll from one dashboard. Netchex builds its own platform and staffs its own support team, from the code to the phone line.
Last updated: September 2026. Cirrus Payroll information comes from the company’s own website, its Better Business Bureau profile, and a published AccountantsWorld case study. Netchex figures come from G2 and Netchex’s own customer data.
The Short Version
Winn started Cirrus after several years working inside payroll at another firm. “That was 7 years ago, and I fell in love with payroll so much that I’ve made it my exclusive business ever since,” he said in an AccountantsWorld case study. Today the firm serves small businesses with 1 to 250 employees nationally, S-corps, owner-only payrolls, and clients referred by CPA firms.
Its BBB profile shows an A+ rating with zero complaints closed in the past three years.
That’s a clean record for a small shop.
Netchex was founded in Louisiana more than 20 years ago for the businesses that keep America running: restaurants, hotels, dealerships, clinics. It’s one company from the code to the phone line. The US-based, FPC-certified support team answers 90% of calls in under a minute, customers rate that service 4.8 out of 5, and Netchex holds an 8.9/10 Quality of Support score on G2.

Netchex vs. Cirrus Payroll on Payroll and Time
Per its site, Cirrus assigns every client a dedicated payroll specialist and handles electronic tax filing and deposits. Time and attendance runs on WorkforceHub, a separate product from Swipeclock, with geofencing for mobile clock-ins. For a small team without an HR department, that’s a real, useful combination.
Payroll Relief is the only one that really lends itself to creating a paperless digital model that’s built for the needs of small businesses.
– Tyler Winn, CPA, Founder and President, Cirrus Payroll
What Cirrus can’t change is the engine underneath. Payroll Relief was built by AccountantsWorld for accounting firms to run many clients’ payroll from one login. Cirrus decides how to service you. Payroll Relief decides what the software does and when it changes.
Netchex writes its own payroll engine and its own time and attendance module, and Scheduler sits in the same system. OneScreen Payroll pulls onboarding, overtime, benefits and taxes into one readiness view, and most teams wrap a run in under 15 minutes. So when your one-person S-corp becomes a 20-person clinic, the system doesn’t have to bolt one vendor’s product onto another’s.

HR, Benefits and Compliance
Cirrus’s HR services list handbooks, training videos, document management and access to an HR expert, alongside 401(k) and workers’ comp. For an owner who’s never had an HR department, having someone to call about a handbook question is worth something.
Netchex keeps all of it on one employee record. With its in-house benefits solution, enrollment, ACA tracking, onboarding and hiring through Netchex Recruit share the same data, so a new hire’s details get entered once, not three times. ACA Central tracks hours and coverage offers across full-time, part-time and seasonal staff, and Netchex files Forms 1094-C and 1095-C. (The IRS reporting rules for applicable large employers spell out what’s required.)
Less re-keying. Fewer surprises at year end.
| Feature | Netchex | Cirrus Payroll |
| Benefits | ✅ In-house benefits solution | ✅ 401(k) and workers’ comp listed on its site |

Service and Support
Responsiveness shows up again and again in Cirrus’s own client reviews.
I’ve been blown away by their responsiveness. Every time I’ve had a question, I’ve received a thoughtful reply within the hour by a real person who genuinely wants to help.
– Gigi Groom, cirruspayroll.com
A CPA partner who refers his own firm’s clients to Cirrus backs that up. “We are hands-off; Cirrus will grab power of attorney and handle any state or UI letter or anything that arises,” says Brian Whalen, CPA.
The honest consideration is capacity, not quality. Cirrus is a small team, roughly 11 people by one recent count, serving a client roster in the hundreds. That model works well for straightforward small-business payroll. It gets tested as a company adds locations, adds pay complexity, or just adds employees faster than a small team can onboard them.
Netchex skips that scale question entirely. The people who answer the phone work for the company that wrote the code. Ninety percent of calls are picked up in under a minute with first-call resolution, and every customer has a dedicated Account Manager.
Netchex has the best support of any service provider I’ve ever worked with. There aren’t any hoops to jump through with Netchex support.

Implementation and Switching
Switching payroll mid-year feels risky. What you really want to know is how much of the work lands on your desk.
Netchex implementation is free and project-managed, usually wrapping up in about six weeks, with free data imports and a 96% implementation satisfaction score. One team owns it from the first data pull to the first live payroll.
Cirrus doesn’t publish an implementation timeline on its site. If you’re comparing, ask what “onboarding” actually includes, and whether Cirrus or Payroll Relief itself handles the data migration.
Who Each Is Built For
Cirrus Payroll may fit if: you’re a very small business or a solo S-corp owner, your CPA already works with them, and you’re comfortable with software built for accounting firms rather than for your business directly.
Netchex may fit if: you run an hourly or multi-location team, you want one company accountable for the platform and the support, and you’d like time, scheduling and payroll in a single system as you add employees and locations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cirrus Payroll doesn’t build its own software. It resells and services Payroll Relief, a platform built by AccountantsWorld, now part of IRIS Software Group, and designed for accounting firms. Cirrus assigns a dedicated payroll specialist and handles tax filing and HR support, but the underlying engine, updates and limitations come from Payroll Relief, not from Cirrus itself.
Cirrus Payroll targets small businesses with 1 to 250 employees nationally, including S-corps, owner-only payrolls, and clients referred by CPA firms. It’s a small, founder-led firm with a strong Better Business Bureau record. Netchex is built for hourly and multi-location businesses that want time, scheduling and payroll running on one native system.
Cirrus can work well for straightforward small-business payroll. As headcount grows, locations multiply, or pay rules get more complex, you’re relying on a small team supporting software someone else built. Netchex builds its own platform, so time, scheduling, benefits and payroll can scale with a growing headcount without changing systems.
Netchex implementation is free and project-managed and usually takes about six weeks, including free data imports. Customers give the process a 96% implementation satisfaction score. A dedicated team handles setup from the first data pull through the first live payroll, so the switch doesn’t fall on one owner or office manager alone.
