Multi-State Payroll: What Changes on January 1

Every state runs its own clock on minimum wage, tax withholding, and filing deadlines. Here’s what resets at year-end and what to check for every state you operate in.

Why multi-state employers have a different year-end checklist

A single-location business closes out one set of tax tables and one minimum wage. A multi-state or multi-location employer closes out as many versions of that as it has jurisdictions, and several of them change on different effective dates, not all January 1. This page puts the actual dated changes in one place instead of forcing a payroll team to check 15 state websites individually.

Figures below are validated against 2 or more independent sources unless marked otherwise. This page is general information, not legal or tax advice, and figures should be confirmed against official sources for your specific states before making compliance decisions. For the broader federal and state picture beyond multi-location pay rates, see 2027 Payroll & Tax Compliance Changes.
