Running payroll for a five-person office is one job. Running payroll for hourly staff across three restaurant locations, with turnover every few months and a manager who isn’t at a desk most of the day, is a different job entirely. That’s the gap that shows up fast when growing businesses outgrow entry-level payroll tools.

OnPay is a solid, affordable payroll platform for very small businesses just getting off spreadsheets or an accountant’s manual process. Netchex is built for a different stage: businesses with 50 to 5,000 employees, hourly and deskless workforces, and lean HR teams who need payroll, benefits, time tracking, and HR in one place, backed by a real person who answers the phone.

Here’s how Netchex and OnPay actually compare on pricing, features, and service, so you can pick the platform that fits where your business is headed, not just where it started.

Netchex vs OnPay: Payroll & HR Comparison

  1. Netchex — Best for mid-market businesses with hourly, multi-location, or deskless workforces that need full HCM plus white-glove US-based service.
  2. OnPay — Best for very small businesses, roughly 5 to 50 employees, that need affordable, no-frills payroll and are comfortable with self-service support.

How We Evaluated Netchex and OnPay

We compared both platforms on pricing transparency, depth of HR and benefits functionality, time and attendance capability, service model, and how each platform fits businesses with hourly or shift-based staff across multiple locations. Payroll accuracy and tax filing reliability were weighted heavily, since a payroll mistake costs more than software fees.

Independent reviewer data was sourced from G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and the Better Business Bureau. Competitor claims were last verified in July 2026.

Netchex: Built for Growing, Deskless Workforces

Netchex was founded 20 years ago in Louisiana for the businesses that keep America running, restaurants, hotels, clinics, and manufacturers, where employees are on the floor, not behind a desk. Instead of choosing between a big platform with poor service or a small provider with a thin product, Netchex delivers both.

Every Netchex customer gets a dedicated Account Manager, free white-glove implementation in about six weeks, and a US-based, FPC-certified service team that answers 90% of calls in under a minute. That matters most when payroll breaks on a Friday afternoon and someone’s paycheck is on the line.

Netchex has been a game changer for our payroll and HR processes. Their customer service team is always available and quick to resolve any issues we run into.

OnPay: Affordable Payroll for Very Small Businesses

OnPay charges a straightforward $49 per month base fee plus $6 per employee, which covers full-service payroll, multi-state tax filing, and basic benefits administration through licensed in-house agents. It’s a fair deal for a business just moving off manual payroll.

However, HR functionality is a paid add-on, not included, running an extra $15 per month plus $2 per worker for PTO tracking, onboarding workflows, and document management. Time and attendance isn’t native either. OnPay leans on third-party integrations instead of a built-in module, and there’s no dedicated account manager, just a shared support team.

Support can be slow to respond during busy periods / The interface feels basic compared to what we needed once we grew past a handful of employees / We had to add several paid add-ons just to get the HR features we assumed were included

— Capterra / G2 reviewers, 2025
StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Transparent, affordable base pricing✗ HR tools are a paid add-on, not included in base plan
✓ Full-service tax filing included✗ No native time & attendance module
✓ First month free for new customers✗ No dedicated account manager, shared support queue
