Modern Payroll for Small Business
Does a beautifully designed interface make up for missing the pay complexity dealerships actually need?
Gusto has earned a strong reputation for making payroll approachable. The interface is clean, onboarding is smooth, and for a straightforward business — say, a small shop where everyone’s hourly — it works well. Gusto offers automated tax filing, benefits brokering, unlimited payroll runs across all plans, and built-in time tracking on its Plus and Premium tiers.
Where Gusto falls short for dealerships is in pay structure complexity. Gusto’s own help documentation states explicitly: “Gusto does not support commission draws.” While you can add one-time commission amounts as a line item during payroll runs, the platform doesn’t automate draw-against-commission calculations, chargebacks, or the multi-step pay structures common in dealership sales departments. Flat-rate technician pay isn’t a native pay type either — it would need to be handled through custom earnings types with manual calculation.
There are no DMS integrations. Gusto doesn’t connect with CDK, DealerTrack, Reynolds & Reynolds, or other dealership management systems. For a single-location shop with 15 employees, that’s likely fine. For a multi-department dealership reconciling repair orders and technician hours, it creates a manual data entry gap.

Paychex is a well-established payroll and HR provider with a wide product suite that includes payroll processing, benefits administration, retirement plan services, HR advisory, and time and attendance. The company serves businesses of various sizes and has a network of local sales representatives in most U.S. markets.
Paychex is an industry-agnostic platform — it does not market automotive-specific features, DMS integrations, or dealership-tailored pay structure automation. However, QuickBooks Payroll is fundamentally an add-on to accounting software — not a workforce management platform.
