A dispatcher calls in a load that got rerouted through three states overnight, half your drivers are paid by the mile and the other half draw a flat rate, and payroll’s due Friday no matter what. Fleets that deal with that every week eventually go looking for a payroll provider who gets it. Superior Trucking Payroll Service built its whole business around that exact problem. So when you’re weighing Netchex vs. Superior Trucking Payroll Service, it helps to know what each one actually is before you sign anything.

Superior is a payroll bureau. It processes checks and files taxes for trucking companies and doesn’t try to be anything more. Netchex is a full HR, payroll, time and benefits platform built for operating businesses of many kinds, trucking fleets included, that need more than a paycheck run.

Last updated: September 2026. Superior Trucking Payroll Service information comes from the company’s own website and public listings. Netchex figures come from G2 and Netchex’s own customer data.

The Short Version

Superior Trucking Payroll Service is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and its site calls it “the only U.S. payroll company built exclusively for trucking fleets.” The founder story is a good one: a former trucking-company CFO who got burned by payroll software that mishandled mileage data left to build something better after a conversation about per diem tax strategy with another fleet owner. That kind of origin story is rare, and it shows up in the product. Mileage pay, per diem and driver-specific pay stubs are the whole point, not an afterthought bolted onto generic payroll software.

Netchex was founded in Louisiana more than 20 years ago for the businesses that keep America running: restaurants, hotels, dealerships, clinics, and yes, the fleets that move freight between all of them. It’s one company from the code to the phone line. The US-based, FPC-certified support team answers 90% of calls in under a minute, customers rate that service 4.8 out of 5, and Netchex holds an 8.9/10 Quality of Support score on G2.

Netchex vs. Superior Trucking Payroll Service on Payroll and Time

Superior’s site lists driver payroll with mileage pay and per diem, federal, state and local payroll tax filing, customized driver pay stubs, and W-2 and 1099 support. There’s an Instant Price Estimator on the site too, and every account gets what it calls a dedicated payroll expert. For a fleet whose pay structure is genuinely unusual, having a bureau that speaks that language on day one is worth something.

What Superior doesn’t do is HR, benefits or scheduling. That’s not a knock, it’s the model: one job, done for one industry.

Netchex writes its own payroll engine, and time and attendance and Scheduler live in the same system. Multi-location and multi-EIN businesses, which describes a lot of trucking operations with terminals in more than one state, work from a single login instead of juggling separate accounts. OneScreen Payroll pulls onboarding, overtime, benefits and taxes into one readiness view, and most teams wrap a run in under 15 minutes.

HR, Benefits and Compliance

Superior’s site doesn’t describe HR management, benefits enrollment or onboarding tools. Its offer is payroll and taxes, done well for one vertical. If your fleet needs more than that, you’re looking at a second vendor for everything else, which means a second login and a second set of records that don’t talk to the first.

Netchex keeps it on one employee record. With its in-house benefits solution, enrollment, ACA tracking, onboarding and hiring through Netchex Recruit share the same data, so a new driver’s information gets entered once. ACA Central tracks hours and coverage offers across full-time, part-time and seasonal staff, which matters for a fleet that brings on seasonal drivers during peak freight months. Netchex files Forms 1094-C and 1095-C, too. (The IRS reporting rules for applicable large employers spell out what’s required.)

One record. Fewer surprises when tax season hits.

Service and Support

Superior backs its work with what it calls the STPS No-Penalty Guarantee: “We file your payroll taxes on time, every time.” Its BBB profile shows an A+ rating with zero complaints in three years, though it isn’t BBB accredited and has no reviews posted there. Customers on its own site sound genuinely happy. “I love having Superior trucking handle all my payroll and taxes…They are the best,” one client, Dianna Palmer, is quoted saying.

Worth knowing before you compare notes with other fleet owners: Superior doesn’t appear to have a G2 listing, and Capterra returned no results for it either as of this writing. That’s not unusual for a small regional bureau, but it does mean there’s less independent, third-party review data to check against its own testimonials than you’d find for a bigger platform.

Netchex answers to that same kind of scrutiny differently. Ninety percent of calls are picked up in under a minute with first-call resolution, and every customer gets a dedicated Account Manager. Netchex also works directly with your CPA and your existing benefits broker, so the accountant who already knows your fleet stays in the loop.

Netchex has the best support of any service provider I’ve ever worked with. There aren’t any hoops to jump through with Netchex support.

Implementation and Switching

Superior’s site doesn’t publish an implementation timeline. If you’re evaluating it, ask directly how long setup takes and what you’re responsible for versus what its team handles.

Netchex implementation is free and project-managed, usually wrapping up in about six weeks, with free data imports and a 96% implementation satisfaction score. One team owns it from the first data pull to the first live payroll.

Who Each Is Built For

Superior Trucking Payroll Service may fit if: you run a trucking company and payroll, mileage pay and per diem are genuinely your hardest problem, and you’re fine handling HR, benefits and scheduling somewhere else.

Netchex may fit if: your fleet needs payroll, time, HR and benefits working off the same employee record, you’re managing drivers across more than one location or EIN, and you want a US-based team that answers the phone. For a closer look at another common alternative, see our Netchex vs. ADP.
