5 Best FlexChecks Alternatives for Small and Midsize Businesses in 2026

A dealership group in Kalamazoo adding a second service center. A dental practice in Traverse City hiring its third hygienist. A manufacturer in Grand Rapids running three shifts a day. Businesses like these often start with FlexChecks, the Grand Rapids bureau known for its long history and its in-house flex benefits work. Some begin comparing FlexChecks alternatives once they want one payroll system instead of two, or want the software and the support to come from a single company.

FlexChecks was incorporated in 1997 and has grown through real history of its own, including a 2006 acquisition of CBS Payroll Solutions’ client base. Today it runs client payroll on isolved and on a separately named product called CyberPay Phoenix. Here are five options worth weighing against it.

5 Best FlexChecks Alternatives for Small and Midsize Businesses

  1. Netchex – Best overall for dealerships, clinics, restaurants and other hourly, multi-location teams that want one company behind the platform and the support.
  2. isolved (direct) – One of the platforms FlexChecks already runs, bought straight from the source.
  3. Paychex Flex – A national provider with local reps and a PEO option.
  4. ADP Workforce Now – Enterprise reach and global payroll.
  5. Paylocity – A deep integration library and engagement tools, with a longer ramp-up.

How We Evaluated These FlexChecks Alternatives

Overtime during a tent sale, a flex spending deadline, a hygienist starting mid pay period. Small and midsize employers juggle all of it at once. We asked each option the same questions: who builds the software, who answers when payroll breaks, how many systems a client has to log into, and what switching actually takes. FlexChecks’ details come from its own website and its BBB profile. Everything on the other providers comes from their sites, independent review platforms and analyst estimates, as of September 2026.

Be fair to what you already have, too. A rep who knows your account by name and a training library you can use any time both count for something. Ask every vendor below exactly who you’d be calling.

#1 Netchex – Best Overall FlexChecks Alternative

Netchex was founded in Louisiana more than 20 years ago for the businesses that keep America running, from restaurants and hotels to dealerships and clinics. The difference from FlexChecks starts with ownership. Netchex builds its own payroll, time, HR and benefits platform and staffs its own support team. There’s no second software company involved, and no question about which system a client is on.

For a dealership or a multi-site clinic, that means time and attendance and Scheduler share one system with payroll, with multi-rate pay and shift differentials handled automatically. OneScreen Payroll gets most teams through a run in under 15 minutes. The US-based, FPC-certified team answers 90% of calls in under a minute, and every customer gets a dedicated Account Manager. Running more than one location or EIN? One login covers it. Implementation is free, project-managed and usually about six weeks, and Netchex works with the CPA and benefits broker a client already trusts.

The entire staff, from sales to implementation to service, has been stellar in their delivery. The culture of Netchex is one of a company that demonstrates the importance of relationships with clients.

– David Faunce, Partner, KM Consulting
StrengthsConsiderations
✓ One company builds the platform and answers the phone✗ No global payroll for teams outside the US
✓ 4.8/5 customer satisfaction and 8.9/10 G2 Quality of Support
✓ Free, project-managed implementation with a 96% satisfaction score

#2 isolved (Direct) – The Same Software, Minus the Bureau Layer

FlexChecks is a certified isolved partner, so at least some of its clients are already running People Cloud under the FlexChecks brand. isolved itself is a broad platform: payroll, HR records, time, benefits, and recruiting through an ApplicantPro integration. Going direct means keeping the software you already know and dropping the reseller in the middle.

It also changes who picks up the phone. isolved’s own FAQ says employers who license isolved through a partner firm “receive support directly from that service provider”. If a client is on FlexChecks’ CyberPay Phoenix side instead, moving to isolved directly is a full platform change, not a simple switch. Reviewers describe a mixed experience once you’re through the door.

Support response times have been inconsistent depending on who we’re routed to.

– G2 / Capterra reviewer, 2025
StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Familiar software for clients already on isolved✗ Capterra rating of 3.9/5 across roughly 650 reviews
✓ Broad People Cloud feature set✗ G2 Quality of Support score of 8.5/10
✓ Direct customers get their own support team✗ You give up the FlexChecks relationship

#3 Paychex Flex – National Reach, Local Reps

Paychex was founded in New York in 1971 and is based in Rochester. It has sales and service reps across most US markets, retirement plan services, and a PEO option for owners who want to hand off more of HR. It also owns Paycor, which runs as a standalone business unit.

Consistency is the weak spot. Service quality tends to depend on which rep gets assigned to an account, and G2 reviewers report tax filing errors. Coming from a bureau built around a personal CSR relationship, that’s a real adjustment to make.

Paychex has FAILED to file quarterly reports and now the EDD is sending a Notice of Intent to Lien. We have been assessed thousands of dollars in penalties.

– Verified Reviewer, G2
StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Local reps in most US markets✗ Trustpilot score of 1.7/5 across 826 reviews
✓ Retirement services and a PEO option✗ G2 Quality of Support score of 8.3/10
✓ Familiar name for ownership groups and boards✗ Shift differentials are limited

#4 ADP Workforce Now – Built for Complexity

ADP was founded in New Jersey in 1949, and Workforce Now sits between its RUN small-business product and its Vantage HCM enterprise suite. It offers a large third-party marketplace, broad compliance and reporting tools, and global payroll for companies with people outside the US. That last piece is a real advantage if a client is expanding overseas.

For a single dealership or a two-location dental practice, though, it’s a lot of system. Workforce Now implementations run several months, shift differentials need custom setup, and reviewers say support is hard to reach.

The worst thing about ADP Workforce Now is its customer service. It is terribly hard to reach someone, and when you do reach someone, they can’t always answer your question.

– Verified G2 Reviewer
StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Large third-party marketplace✗ G2 Quality of Support score of 7.9/10
✓ Global payroll✗ Implementation runs several months
✓ Broad compliance and reporting✗ Trustpilot score of 1.2/5 for ADP

#5 Paylocity – Integrations and Engagement

Paylocity offers 350+ native integrations and a compliance dashboard multi-state employers like. Its engagement tools, social feeds and peer recognition among them, suit office-based HR teams building a culture program, and its mobile app is a genuine strength.

Hourly, multi-department teams are a tougher fit. One Reddit complaint describes multi-rate pay failing to apply when staff clock into a different department, which means checking timecards by hand. One analyst site puts core implementation at 8 to 12 weeks.

The system has ‘glitches’ that prevent it from correctly calculating overtime for hourly employees. Our account manager said the system simply couldn’t handle the calculation.

– Reddit user
StrengthsConsiderations
✓ 350+ native integrations✗ “Poor Customer Support” is its most common G2 complaint tag
✓ Strong mobile experience✗ Multi-rate pay issues reported across departments
✓ Engagement and recognition tools✗ Core implementation estimated at 8 to 12 weeks
