Say you run a small manufacturing shop outside Manchester, New Hampshire, plus a second location an hour south. Payroll has to land the same day every two weeks no matter what, and when a W-2 question comes up in January, you want someone who picks up the phone and actually knows your account. That’s the market Trivantus has served for years. If you’re weighing Netchex vs. Trivantus, the question underneath the question is who actually builds what you’re running on, and who answers when it breaks.

Trivantus is a Manchester, NH company. Its own site says it was founded in 2003, though the Better Business Bureau lists a 2001 start date for the business. Neither figure has been reconciled publicly, so both are worth knowing if timeline matters to you.

Netchex was founded in Louisiana more than 20 years ago for the businesses that keep America running: restaurants, hotels, dealerships, clinics. It writes its own payroll, time, HR and benefits platform and staffs its own support team, start to finish.

Last updated: September 2026. Trivantus information comes from the company’s own website and its BBB profile. Netchex figures come from G2 and Netchex’s own customer data.

The Short Version

Trivantus is owned by the Gatsas family. Founder and CEO Michael Gatsas also co-founded a staffing and PEO business, so the company brings real workers’ comp and benefits know-how to the table. Trivantus has been named Best Payroll Service Company by New Hampshire Business Review for several years running, and it made the Inc. 5000 list in 2017. Its About page also spells out a service philosophy worth noting: customer service reps use the same software the clients do, nobody’s work is outsourced, and there’s a stated “no voice mail” policy.

What Trivantus doesn’t spell out is who actually builds the software underneath its branded “Freedom HCM” and “Freedom Payroll” platform. Neither its About page nor its product pages name a vendor, and there’s no G2, Capterra or TrustRadius listing to cross-check against. That’s not a knock on the service Trivantus provides. It’s just a gap in what’s publicly known.

Netchex doesn’t have that gap. It’s one company from the code to the phone line: 90% of calls answered in under a minute with first-call resolution, customers rating that service 4.8 out of 5, and an 8.9/10 Quality of Support score on G2. Every customer also gets a dedicated Account Manager.

Netchex vs. Trivantus on Payroll and Time

Trivantus’s site lists payroll and tax filing, time and attendance, scheduling, benefits enrollment, ACA reporting, onboarding, workers’ comp, recruiting, compliance and a mobile employee portal. That’s a full HCM lineup on paper, and it covers what most growing businesses actually need.

The catch is the same one from a minute ago. Trivantus configures and services Freedom HCM, but somebody else, unnamed, decides what the underlying software does and when it changes. If that vendor shifts strategy, raises fees, or gets acquired, Trivantus has to absorb whatever comes down from above.

Netchex writes its own payroll engine and its own time and attendance module, with Scheduler in the same system. A shift that runs long on a Friday flows straight into payroll without crossing from one company’s code into someone else’s. OneScreen Payroll pulls onboarding, overtime, benefits and taxes into a single readiness view, and most teams finish a run in under 15 minutes.

HR, Benefits and Compliance

Trivantus lists benefits enrollment, ACA reporting, onboarding, workers’ comp and Section 125 plans among its services. The owner’s PEO background shows up here. Workers’ comp and benefits are areas where that kind of experience genuinely helps a client.

Netchex keeps enrollment, ACA tracking, onboarding and hiring through Netchex Recruit on one employee record, so a new hire’s details get entered once instead of copied across three systems. ACA Central tracks hours and coverage offers across full-time, part-time and seasonal staff, and Netchex files Forms 1094-C and 1095-C directly. (The IRS reporting rules for applicable large employers spell out what applicable large employers actually owe the IRS each year.)

Netchex also works directly with a client’s CPA and existing benefits broker, so switching platforms doesn’t mean switching every relationship around it.

Service and Support

Give Trivantus credit here. Its stated policies are unusually specific for a company its size: reps who use the same screens clients see, no outsourced staff, and a flat “no voice mail” rule. Those are real commitments, not marketing filler.

What’s missing is anything to check them against. There’s no G2, Capterra or TrustRadius profile for Trivantus, and its BBB record shows zero customer reviews and zero complaints closed in the last three years. An A+ rating with a clean complaint history is a good sign. It also means there’s no independent volume of feedback to weigh against a company’s own description of itself.

Netchex has that volume. Ninety percent of calls are answered in under a minute with first-call resolution, and the company holds an 8.9/10 Quality of Support score across a large base of G2 reviews.

Netchex has the best support of any service provider I’ve ever worked with. There aren’t any hoops to jump through with Netchex support.

Implementation and Switching

Neither company publishes a lot of head-to-head detail here, so ask directly before you sign anything.

Netchex implementation is free and project-managed, usually wrapping up in about six weeks, with free data imports and a 96% implementation satisfaction score. One team owns the process from the first data pull to the first live payroll.

Trivantus doesn’t publish an implementation timeline on its site. If you’re comparing the two, ask Trivantus for one in writing, and ask exactly which parts of setup its team handles versus what depends on whoever builds Freedom HCM underneath it.

Who Each Is Built For

Trivantus may fit if: you’re based in or near New Hampshire, you value a smaller company with a strict no-voicemail policy, and you’re comfortable that the software vendor behind Freedom HCM isn’t publicly named.

Netchex may fit if: you want a documented support track record before you sign, you run hourly or multi-location teams, and you’d rather have one company own the platform and the phone line instead of an unnamed vendor sitting behind the brand you’re actually dealing with.
