A dispensary group with locations in three states just added a construction crew building out a fourth. The payroll rules don’t match from one location to the next, and 280E tax treatment isn’t something a generalist bookkeeper wants to touch without help. That’s the exact kind of employer Würk built its business around. So when you’re weighing Netchex vs. Würk, the question isn’t which platform has more features. It’s which one was built for the compliance load you’re actually carrying.
Würk launched in 2015 as one of the first HCM companies built specifically for cannabis, and it was founded by Keegan Peterson out of Denver. Netchex started in Louisiana that same general era, more than 20 years ago now, for a different kind of operator: restaurants, hotels, dealerships, clinics. Two companies, two starting points, and by 2026 some real overlap in who they’re chasing.
Last updated: September 2026. Würk information comes from the company’s own site, press materials, and independent listings. Netchex figures come from G2 and Netchex’s own customer data.
The Short Version
Würk describes itself as an all-in-one HCM solution covering payroll, time and labor, HR, recruiting, onboarding, benefits and retirement services, plus managed payroll, managed HR and managed tax registration for clients who’d rather hand pieces off entirely. Its homepage now lists cannabis, hemp and CBD alongside what it calls “compliance-centric industries”: alcohol and beverage, casinos and gaming, healthcare, construction, manufacturing, agriculture and towing. That’s a wider net than the cannabis-only pitch it started with.
Netchex was founded in Louisiana for the businesses that keep America running, and its team writes and supports its own payroll, time, HR and benefits platform end to end. The US-based, FPC-certified support team answers 90% of calls in under a minute with first-call resolution, customers rate that service 4.8 out of 5, and Netchex holds an 8.9/10 Quality of Support score on G2.
Netchex vs. Würk on Payroll and Compliance
Cannabis compliance is genuinely hard, and Würk leans into it. A 2024 company release cites 280E tax guidance built into its service, coverage across all 50 states and Puerto Rico, and more than 5,100 taxing jurisdictions handled. That kind of depth doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the product of years spent in an industry most payroll vendors won’t touch.
What’s less clear is what’s actually running underneath it. Würk markets the platform as its own all-in-one HCM solution, but nothing on its site says whether that engine is built entirely in-house or licenses pieces from elsewhere. Worth asking directly if you’re evaluating it.
Netchex builds and owns its payroll engine, and time and attendance run natively in the same system, with Scheduler alongside it. When a crew works a split shift across two entities, the hours and overtime flow straight into payroll rather than crossing between separate products. OneScreen Payroll pulls onboarding, overtime, benefits and taxes into one readiness view, and most teams finish a run in under 15 minutes. Multi-location and multi-EIN businesses work from a single login.

HR, Benefits and Compliance
Würk’s service list includes HR management, recruiting, onboarding, BenefitWürks benefits administration, retirement plan services, and Würk Insurance, which covers employee benefit captives. Its site also markets compensation benchmarking built on more than nine years of cannabis pay data, which is a specific, real asset for an industry where comparable salary data is hard to find anywhere else.
Netchex keeps the same functions on one employee record. With its in-house benefits solution, enrollment, ACA tracking, onboarding and hiring through Netchex Recruit share the same data, so nobody re-keys a new hire’s file three separate times. ACA Central tracks hours and coverage offers across full-time, part-time and seasonal staff, and Netchex files Forms 1094-C and 1095-C directly.
Different playbooks, same goal: fewer places for a compliance error to hide.
Service and Support
Würk backs its software with managed-service options, meaning a client can hand off payroll, HR or tax registration entirely rather than run it in-house. That’s a meaningful choice for an operator who doesn’t want to build an internal payroll function at all. Customer quotes on Würk’s own site back up the relationship it’s built with cannabis operators: one General Manager at Byway Brewing Company says, “We’ve been with Würk for nearly ten years, and I don’t see us going anywhere else.”
Netchex takes a different shape. The people who answer the phone work for the same company that wrote the code, whatever industry you’re in. Ninety percent of calls are picked up in under a minute with first-call resolution, and every customer gets a dedicated Account Manager who works directly with your CPA and your existing benefits broker.
Netchex has the best support of any service provider I’ve ever worked with. There aren’t any hoops to jump through with Netchex support.

Where Each One Fits
Würk may fit if: cannabis compliance is your single biggest operational risk, you value deep 280E and multi-jurisdiction tax expertise, and you’d rather hand pieces of payroll or HR to a managed-service team than run them yourself.
Netchex may fit if: you run hourly or multi-location teams across the industries Würk has newly expanded into, like healthcare and construction, and you want a platform with a longer general-market track record alongside its own dedicated support.
