Netchex vs. Peoplease: Which HR and Payroll Platform Is Right for Your Business in 2026?

Netchex vs. Peoplease: Which HR and Payroll Platform Is Right for Your Business in 2026?

It’s Wednesday afternoon, and a dispatcher just told you two drivers picked up extra loads. At a company running its own payroll, you add the hours and move on. At a PEO with a 48-hour submission cutoff, you may already be too late for Friday. Small moments like that decide the Netchex vs. Peoplease question for a lot of trucking and construction companies.

Peoplease is a Professional Employer Organization founded in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1994. It’s grown by acquisition, adding the trucking PEO TLC Companies and two Florida PEOs, and it sells mainly to blue- and gray-collar businesses. Netchex is payroll and HR software your team runs directly. One puts your workforce into co-employment. The other keeps you as the only employer on the paperwork.

The Short Version

Peoplease packages payroll, workers’ comp, benefits, HR, and safety support into one co-employment relationship, run on a PrismHR-based platform. Its workers’ comp program is the real draw for high-risk industries. The catch is the model itself. Your employees become Peoplease’s co-employees, your payroll runs on its schedule, and its fee is tied to your payroll, so it rises every time you hire a driver or give a raise.

Netchex keeps all of that in your hands. You stay the sole employer under your own EIN. You keep your own benefits plans and your own broker. Most teams run payroll in about 15 minutes with OneScreen Payroll, and a US-based, FPC-certified support team answers 90% of calls in under a minute.

Netchex vs. Peoplease: Whose Employees Are Your Drivers?

Peoplease says it plainly on its own site: it works “through our co-employment model.” When you sign, the PEO becomes an employer of record for your workforce. Wages get reported under the PEO’s tax ID, and tax filings, benefits, and workers’ comp coverage run through its arrangements rather than yours.

To be fair, Peoplease stresses that you keep day-to-day control of hiring, firing, and supervising. That’s true of most PEOs. What changes is the legal and administrative layer underneath. Your drivers and crew leads now have two employers, and one of them is a company they never interviewed with.

You feel that layer most when you try to leave. Tax accounts, payroll history, workers’ comp coverage, and any benefits you took from the PEO all have to come back into your own company’s name. For a fleet or a contractor running multi-state crews, that’s a lot to move at once.

Netchex skips the arrangement entirely. There’s no co-employer and no shared tax ID. Your employees work for you, and they enroll in plans you picked with a broker you chose.

Who Runs Payroll Day to Day

Here’s a detail from Peoplease’s own payroll FAQ that’s easy to skim past: “Payroll data must be submitted to our PEO 48 hours prior to the scheduled pay date.” Pay on Friday, and your numbers are due Wednesday. The PEO processes payroll, files the taxes, and handles enrollment on its platform.

For a trucking or construction company, hours don’t always settle by Wednesday. Loads run late. A crew works Saturday. A foreman forgets to approve a timesheet. In a PEO, fixing that means asking someone else to reopen a process you don’t own, on their timeline.

Netchex hands the controls to your own admins. Payroll, time and attendance, benefits administration, recruiting, onboarding, and performance live in one system your team sets up the way your business actually runs. Most teams finish payroll in about 15 minutes with OneScreen Payroll, so a late change is a quick edit, not a support ticket.

I love the integrated platform. With our old payroll company you would have to make the same change in several different areas of the software. With Netchex, it only takes once. This system is so user-friendly, it makes training a breeze. And the customer service is second to none!

What Happens to the Bill as You Add Trucks and Crews

Peoplease doesn’t publish its fees. You get a quote after sharing your headcount, payroll, benefits, and workers’ comp details. The PEO directory PEO Reviews lists its fee structure as percentage-based, meaning the charge is a share of your payroll.

Think about what that does in a blue-collar business. Every new driver adds payroll. So does every raise you give to keep a good operator from jumping to another carrier, and every overtime-heavy month in peak season. The PEO’s cut grows with each one, and it lands on top of what you’d pay anyway: wages, employer taxes, benefit premiums, and workers’ comp.

Buyers of other big PEOs report the same curve. TriNet reviewers on Capterra point to “rising per-employee costs at scale,” and review aggregators name premium, rising cost as a top complaint about Insperity. Model the fee at the headcount you expect in three years, not the one you have today.

Netchex doesn’t charge you a co-employment fee on top of your own benefits and taxes, because there’s no co-employment to charge for. You’re paying for software and service.

Where Peoplease Earns Its Keep: Workers’ Comp

Credit where it’s due. Peoplease’s workers’ comp program is built for industries other insurers shy away from. It partners with Chubb for coverage in all 50 states, bills premiums pay-as-you-go from actual payroll with no upfront deposit or annual audit, and says it will work with companies carrying a high experience mod. It also offers DOT and OSHA support and certified payroll for prevailing-wage jobs.

If a hard-to-place workers’ comp policy is the single biggest problem in your business, that’s a genuine reason to look at a PEO. Netchex isn’t an insurance carrier and doesn’t bundle a workers’ comp program. The question is whether that one benefit is worth handing over your payroll process, your employer relationship, and a fee that climbs with your payroll.

Service and Support

Peoplease runs an employee support center for portal, direct deposit, and W-2 questions, alongside its PEO service teams. Peoplease isn’t listed on G2, Capterra, or Trustpilot, so there’s little independent client feedback to weigh its service against.

Netchex’s service record is public. Every customer gets a dedicated Account Manager. The US-based, FPC-certified team answers 90% of calls in under a minute, with first-call resolution. Customers rate the experience 4.8/5, and G2 reviewers score Quality of Support at 8.9/10.

Ownership and Stability

Peoplease has changed hands more than once. Deal databases show a Capitala Group buyout in 2020, and a law firm that advised AVC Partners reports selling Peoplease to the private-equity arm of a single family office. Along the way it absorbed TLC Companies in 2020 and American Payroll and Benefits and Kymberly Group in 2021. Its homepage still lists separate phone numbers for customers of each legacy brand.

Roll-ups aren’t automatically bad. But when the company that co-employs your workforce is still stitching together four brands under investor ownership, it’s fair to ask how stable your service team and your terms will be a few years from now.

Switching Considerations

Leaving a PEO is a project, not a form. Your workforce moves back under your own EIN, state and federal tax accounts get re-established, payroll history comes over, and any benefits you took through the PEO get rebuilt in your company’s name.

Netchex handles that as a managed project. Implementation is free, project-managed, includes your data import, and takes about six weeks. Customers rate the experience at 96% implementation satisfaction, and the team works directly with your benefits broker and CPA so the transition isn’t all on you.

Who Each One Is Actually Built For

Choose Peoplease if: your workers’ comp is hard to place or your experience mod is high, you want one outside company handling payroll, HR, safety, and coverage for a small crew, and you’re comfortable sharing employer status with a PEO.

Choose Netchex if: you want your own team running payroll on your schedule, you want your drivers and crews to stay your employees, and you don’t want a fee that grows with every hire and raise. It’s built for hourly, multi-location businesses with lean HR teams.
