You already know the ADP name. Maybe you ran ADP payroll for years, and when HR got heavier, TotalSource looked like the obvious next step. Same logo, bigger safety net. But a PEO isn’t a payroll upgrade. It changes who employs your people, and that’s what the Netchex vs. ADP TotalSource decision really comes down to.
ADP TotalSource is ADP’s Professional Employer Organization, based in Miami and launched in 1997. It’s an IRS-Certified PEO backed by one of the biggest names in payroll. Netchex is payroll and HR software your own team runs, with no co-employer involved. If you’re comparing ADP’s software products instead, our Netchex vs. ADP comparison covers that side.

The Short Version
TotalSource wraps payroll, benefits, HR support, and workers’ comp into one co-employment package. Its benefits run through the ADP TotalSource Health and Welfare Plan. In exchange, your employees become ADP’s co-employees, your admins work inside ADP’s service model, and the fee is quoted per employee, so it grows every time you add a person.
Netchex covers payroll, time, benefits administration, and HR without taking any of it off your hands. You stay the only employer. Your benefits are your plans, picked with your broker. And when you call, a US-based, FPC-certified team picks up: 90% of calls are answered in under a minute.

Netchex vs. ADP TotalSource: Whose Employees Are They?
Co-employment sounds like paperwork. It’s more than that. Once you join TotalSource, ADP shares employer status for your workforce. Payroll taxes get filed under the PEO’s tax ID, not yours, and your team’s health coverage comes from ADP’s plan. ADP’s own press materials describe worksite employees as part of “the ADP TotalSource co-employment workforce.”
Day to day, that can feel invisible. It stops being invisible when you want to leave. Coverage has to be rebuilt in your company’s name. Tax accounts move back under your own EIN. Years of payroll history need a new home. The longer you’ve been in, the heavier that lift gets.
To be fair, TotalSource holds a real credential. It appears on the IRS list of Certified Professional Employer Organizations, which carries specific federal employment tax protections. That’s a genuine plus for a PEO. It doesn’t change who’s standing between you and your people.
With Netchex, there’s no one standing there. You keep your EIN, your employees work for you alone, and the benefits they choose from are plans you set up with your own broker.
| Structure | Netchex | ADP TotalSource |
| Who employs your people | You, as the sole employer | You and ADP TotalSource, as co-employers |
| Tax ID your wages report under | Your own EIN | The PEO’s |
| Whose benefits plan it is | Yours, with your broker | ADP TotalSource’s master health plan |
| What leaving involves | Nothing to unwind: the employer relationship was always yours | Moving employees, benefits, and tax accounts back to your company |
Who Runs the Workflow
Under a PEO, the PEO does the processing. TotalSource runs payroll, tax filing, benefits enrollment, and compliance through its own service teams, on ADP Workforce Now with the co-employment model layered on top. Your admins see a portal. ADP runs the machinery behind it.
That’s comfortable until you need something specific. A new earning code for a second location. A different approval path for overtime. A report shaped the way your CFO actually reads it. In a PEO, those turn into requests routed through an HR business partner. Even a broker that partners with ADP TotalSource names “HR business partner caseloads that slow response times” as a main complaint.
Netchex hands the controls back. Your team configures payroll, time and attendance, benefits administration, recruiting, onboarding, and performance in one system. Most teams run payroll in about 15 minutes with OneScreen Payroll. Support is there to help you do it, not to do it for you on their schedule.
I love the integrated platform. With our old payroll company you would have to make the same change in several different areas of the software. With Netchex, it only takes once. This system is so user-friendly, it makes training a breeze. And the customer service is second to none!

What It Costs as Headcount Climbs
ADP doesn’t publish TotalSource rates. Every review we checked, from Business.com to Business News Daily, flags it. You get a custom quote, and PEO fees are typically charged per employee or as a share of payroll. Either way, the bill rises with each hire and each raise.
Then come the extras. Business News Daily notes that tools like recruiting and time tracking are paid add-ons for TotalSource clients. All of it sits on top of the costs you’d carry anyway: wages, employer taxes, benefit premiums, and workers’ comp.
Reviewers say it plainly. A PEO broker’s review of TotalSource cites “concerns about the high cost of the service, lack of transparency in quotes and fee structures.” G2 reviewers also describe trouble getting incorrect charges reversed. At 40 employees, that’s an annoyance. At 250, it’s a budget line worth fighting over.
Netchex doesn’t charge you for co-employment, because there isn’t any. Time and attendance and recruiting live in the same system as payroll, and your benefits costs are between you and your carrier.
Service and Support
ADP assigns TotalSource clients an HR business partner and a support team. The experience varies. One G2 theme says that despite the promise of a dedicated support agent, clients seldom get one. TotalSource’s G2 Quality of Support score sits at 8.2/10.
Netchex scores 8.9/10 on the same G2 measure. Every customer gets a dedicated Account Manager, and the US-based, FPC-certified team answers 90% of calls in under a minute, with first-call resolution. Customers rate the service 4.8/5.

Where TotalSource Genuinely Shines
Benefits are the strong suit. TotalSource’s master plan works with national carriers, and Business.com named it the best PEO for benefits administration in 2026. The parent company’s size means financial stability isn’t in question, and the IRS certification is verified.
If you’re a small company that wants large-group coverage and has no appetite for running HR at all, those strengths are real. The question is whether you want to trade your employer relationship to get them.
Switching Considerations
Leaving a PEO means reversing co-employment. Employees move back under your own EIN, benefits get set up in your company’s name, and payroll history has to come along. Read your TotalSource agreement’s termination terms early, so the timing works in your favor.
Netchex runs that move as a project. Implementation is free and project-managed, takes about six weeks, and includes your data import. Customers give the process 96% implementation satisfaction. Netchex works directly with your benefits broker and CPA, so your team isn’t carrying the transition alone.
Who Each One Is Actually Built For
Choose ADP TotalSource if: you want ADP to take over HR, benefits, and workers’ comp as a co-employer, you value large-group health plans and CPEO status above control, and you’re fine with fees that track headcount.
Choose Netchex if: you want your admins configuring their own payroll and HR, you want your people to stay your employees, and you don’t want a co-employment fee riding on every new hire. Netchex is built for hourly, multi-location businesses with lean HR teams.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. ADP TotalSource is ADP’s PEO, a co-employment arrangement where ADP shares employer status and files payroll taxes under the PEO’s tax ID. ADP’s payroll software, like Workforce Now, leaves you as the employer. Netchex works the same way as software: you run it, and you stay the only employer.
ADP quotes TotalSource individually and doesn’t publish rates. PEO fees are usually per employee or a share of payroll, so they climb as you hire and give raises. Some tools, like recruiting and time tracking, are paid add-ons, and everything sits on top of wages, taxes, premiums, and workers’ comp.
Yes. ADP TotalSource entities appear on the IRS list of Certified Professional Employer Organizations, which gives clients certain federal employment tax protections. That credential doesn’t remove co-employment. ADP still shares employer status with you, and your team’s health coverage runs through ADP’s master plan instead of a plan you own.
Netchex implementation takes about six weeks and is free, project-managed, and includes your data import. The team helps bring your workforce back under your own EIN and works directly with your benefits broker and CPA, so rebuilding coverage and payroll history doesn’t land entirely on your HR staff.
