5 Best ADP TotalSource Alternatives for Mid-Sized, Multi-Location Businesses

5 Best ADP TotalSource Alternatives for Mid-Sized, Multi-Location Businesses

Your company has grown into three locations and 180 people. Every one of them is co-employed by ADP, every new hire nudges the PEO invoice up, and your payroll lead spends Tuesdays waiting on an HR business partner to approve changes she used to make herself. If that’s where you are, it’s time to look at ADP TotalSource alternatives.

ADP TotalSource is ADP’s IRS-Certified PEO, run out of Miami since 1997. Its benefits are strong and its parent is about as stable as they come. But it’s still a PEO. Your workforce sits in a co-employment arrangement, your team works inside ADP’s service model, and the fee follows your headcount. Mid-sized, multi-location businesses feel all three.

Here are five options. One takes you out of the PEO model entirely. The other four are PEOs, and we’ll say so plainly.

Best ADP TotalSource Alternatives at a Glance

  1. Netchex: Best for mid-sized, multi-location businesses that want to leave co-employment and run payroll and HR in-house.
  2. TriNet: Best if you want another national PEO, or its HR Plus option without co-employment.
  3. Insperity: Best for companies that still want a full-service PEO with broad benefits.
  4. Paychex PEO: Best for small businesses already on Paychex that want to stay with a large, certified PEO.
  5. CoAdvantage: Best for smaller firms that want a lighter, non-PEO starting tier.

How We Picked These ADP TotalSource Alternatives

We asked the three questions that matter most once a PEO client passes 100 employees or opens a second site. Does the option require co-employment? Who controls the daily payroll and HR work? And what happens to the cost as you hire?

Review data comes from G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and independent PEO reviews where we could verify it. All provider details were checked in September 2026.

1. Netchex: Own Your Payroll Again

Netchex is payroll and HR software, not a PEO. Your employees stay yours, wages report under your own EIN, and the benefits plans are ones you chose with your own broker, administered inside Netchex. There’s no co-employer to answer to and no co-employment fee attached to each new hire.

For a multi-location operation, the bigger change is who holds the controls. Payroll, time and attendance, benefits administration, recruiting, onboarding, and performance run in one system your team sets up the way you work. Most teams finish payroll in about 15 minutes with OneScreen Payroll. When you need a hand, a US-based, FPC-certified team answers 90% of calls in under a minute, and you’ll have a dedicated Account Manager.

Leaving TotalSource takes planning, and Netchex plans it with you. Implementation is free, project-managed, includes your data import, and takes about six weeks.

The entire staff, from sales to implementation to service, has been stellar in their delivery. The culture of Netchex is one of a company that demonstrates the importance of relationships with clients.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ No co-employment: you’re the sole employer✗ No IRS-Certified PEO tax protections, since there’s no PEO
✓ Your own benefits plans, your own broker✗ Leaving a PEO takes a planned implementation, about six weeks
✓ Your admins configure their own workflows
✓ 4.5/5 on G2, 8.9/10 G2 Quality of Support
✓ 96% implementation satisfaction

2. TriNet: Another National PEO, Plus a Side Door

TriNet is one of the largest PEOs in the US, and its core offering is co-employment, just like TotalSource. What sets it apart is HR Plus, an ASO model with no co-employment, which took in the former Zenefits customer base after TriNet bought Zenefits in 2022.

Capterra reviewers point to limited customization inside TriNet’s industry bundles, rising per-employee costs at scale, and uneven account rep continuity. If headcount-driven cost is why you’re leaving ADP, that second complaint deserves a close look.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ National footprint and broad PEO benefits✗ Standard PEO is still co-employment
✓ HR Plus option without co-employment✗ Reviewers cite rising per-employee costs at scale

Compare: Netchex vs. TriNet

3. Insperity: A Sideways Move in the PEO World

Insperity is a well-known full-service PEO whose sweet spot is companies that have outgrown informal HR but haven’t built a department. Moving from TotalSource to Insperity swaps one co-employer for another. It won’t hand your team back its payroll controls.

Its reviews are softer than ADP’s. Insperity holds about 3.9/5 on G2 with an 8.0/10 Quality of Support score. Review aggregators cite premium, rising cost, rigid administrative processes, and service that can fade after onboarding.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Established PEO with broad benefits access✗ Co-employment, same as TotalSource
✓ Dedicated implementation specialist at onboarding✗ Reviewers cite rising cost and rigid processes

Compare: Netchex vs. Insperity

4. Paychex PEO: The Other Payroll Giant’s PEO

Paychex built its PEO largely by buying Oasis Outsourcing in 2018, then folded the Oasis brand into Paychex. It’s an IRS-Certified PEO, and Paychex’s own site says it plainly: the “PEO files payroll taxes under its EIN.” In other words, the same co-employment trade you’d be leaving ADP to escape.

Paychex doesn’t publish its PEO rates either. Review-site complaints describe erroneous fees and rate or term changes mid-contract, and the large majority of Paychex’s company-wide reviews on Trustpilot are one-star. Paychex also acquired Paycor in 2025, so expect product direction to keep shifting.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ IRS-Certified PEO with a long PEO history✗ Co-employment: the PEO files taxes under its EIN
✓ Named support team with an HR business partner✗ Reviewers report billing errors and mid-contract changes

Compare: Netchex vs. Paychex

5. CoAdvantage: Two Tiers, One Merger

CoAdvantage merged with PrimePay in 2025, with both companies owned by the private-equity firm Aquiline Capital Partners. The combined company offers a non-PEO tier next to its full co-employment PEO, which gives smaller clients a lighter way in.

The exit is the weak point. An independent PEO scoring writeup from rfp.wiki rates CoAdvantage 2.6/5 for exit and data portability and 2.7/5 for cost transparency, citing reviewer reports of trouble regaining access to records after leaving.

StrengthsConsiderations
✓ Non-PEO tier alongside the full PEO✗ Full PEO tier is still co-employment
✓ Dedicated HR team model for PEO clients✗ Low third-party scores for exit and cost transparency

Compare: Netchex vs. CoAdvantage

Why Mid-Sized Companies Outgrow ADP TotalSource

Usually it’s not a single blowup. It’s the same three frustrations, getting louder as you add people and locations.

Your team stops running its own process. In a PEO, payroll processing, tax filing, enrollment, and compliance happen inside the PEO’s service model. Your admins file requests where they used to make changes, and the pace is set by someone else’s caseload.

Your employees are partly ADP’s. Co-employment makes the PEO an employer of record, wages report under its tax ID, and your team’s coverage comes from ADP’s master plan. The more people you have, the bigger the job of moving them back.

The fees keep stacking. TotalSource quotes privately, PEO fees usually scale per employee or with payroll, and add-ons like recruiting and time tracking cost extra. It all rides on top of wages, taxes, premiums, and workers’ comp. A second location doesn’t just add people. It adds fees.

Direct payroll and HR software solves all three together. You keep the employer relationship, your team keeps the workflow, and your cost stops tracking a co-employment fee. The IRS page on Certified PEOs explains exactly what that certification covers, so you can see what you’d give up and what you wouldn’t.
