A landscaping company in Hattiesburg that just hired its fifth crew. A nonprofit in Jackson whose grant funding finally covers a full-time program coordinator. Either one might sign with a PEO like People Lease to get HR support without hiring an HR person. And either might start looking at People Lease alternatives a few years later, once the business wants more say over benefits, data or how support gets delivered.
Some context first. People Lease is a Mississippi PEO founded in 1984 and based in Ridgeland, according to its site, with an A+ BBB rating and accreditation dating back to 2007. So the real question isn’t only which vendor to pick. It’s whether co-employment is what you want at all. This list covers both answers.
5 Best People Lease Alternatives for Mississippi Businesses
- Netchex – Best overall for hourly, multi-location employers that want full HR and payroll without co-employment.
- ADP TotalSource – A certified PEO on ADP Workforce Now, with a master health plan.
- Paychex PEO – A certified PEO with a named, multi-role support team.
- Insperity – A full-service PEO for owners who plan to stay in co-employment.
- TriNet – Pick a PEO or a non-PEO HR service, sold in industry bundles.
How We Evaluated These People Lease Alternatives
We asked the same questions of every option. Does the provider become a co-employer? Who picks up the phone when payroll goes sideways? Can you keep your own benefits broker? How well does it handle hourly staff across locations? People Lease’s details come from its website and public listings. Everything else comes from each provider’s own site and independent review platforms, as of September 2026.
One fair point before the list. Forty years in a single state’s PEO market and a BBB record with zero complaints in three years is a real sign of stability, and not every national name here has that kind of long, quiet track record.
#1 Netchex – Best Overall People Lease Alternative
Netchex was founded in Louisiana more than 20 years ago for the businesses that keep America running, from restaurants and hotels to dealerships and clinics. It builds its own payroll, time, HR and benefits platform and staffs its own support team. No co-employment, no reselling another company’s software.
For a business weighing a PEO, that means keeping the HR support while staying the employer. Time and attendance, Scheduler and payroll live in one system, multi-location and multi-EIN businesses use a single login, and most teams finish a payroll run in under 15 minutes. The in-house benefits solution, ACA Central and Netchex Recruit share one employee record, and Netchex works with your CPA and the broker you already trust. A US-based, FPC-certified team answers 90% of calls in under a minute, and everyone gets a dedicated Account Manager.
The entire staff, from sales to implementation to service, has been stellar in their delivery. The culture of Netchex is one of a company that demonstrates the importance of relationships with clients.
– David Faunce, Partner, KM Consulting
| Strengths | Considerations |
| ✓ One company builds the platform and answers the phone | ✗ Not a PEO, so no pooled large-group benefits rates |
| ✓ 4.8/5 customer satisfaction and 8.9/10 G2 Quality of Support | ✗ No global payroll for teams outside the US |
| ✓ Free, project-managed implementation with a 96% satisfaction score | ✗ Built for operating businesses, not tech firms with in-house HR engineering |
#2 ADP TotalSource – A Certified PEO on ADP Workforce Now
If the PEO model is what you want, and you’d rather have a national name behind it, ADP runs one. TotalSource is on the IRS list of certified PEOs, ADP says it’s ESAC-accredited, and it runs on ADP Workforce Now. Benefits come through a master health plan with multiple national carriers, and business editors rate its benefits administration highly.
The common complaints are about access and clarity. A PEO broker lists slow customer support, and reviewers mention billing errors that were hard to reverse. ADP doesn’t publish TotalSource rates, and recruiting, time tracking and scheduling are paid add-ons, per Business News Daily. Its G2 Quality of Support score is 8.2/10.
…despite promising a dedicated support agent, you seldom get one.

| Strengths | Considerations |
| ✓ IRS-Certified PEO with ESAC accreditation | ✗ Rates aren’t published |
| ✓ Master health plan with national carriers | ✗ Time tracking and scheduling are paid add-ons |
| ✓ Backed by ADP, a large public company | ✗ G2 Quality of Support score of 8.2/10 |

#3 Paychex PEO – A Certified PEO With a Named Team
Paychex’s PEO also holds IRS certification, built in part on Oasis, a PEO Paychex acquired in 2018. Its site describes a named support team: a Client Advocate, an HR Business Partner, a Safety Specialist and a Payroll Specialist. The minimum is five employees, according to Business News Daily and Business.com.
Where it gets knocked is cost clarity. Paychex doesn’t publish PEO fees, and reviewers on ConsumerAffairs and Trustpilot describe termination fees when leaving. Business News Daily calls the pricing structure not transparent, in plain terms.
The pricing structure is not transparent.

| Strengths | Considerations |
| ✓ IRS-Certified PEO | ✗ PEO fees aren’t published |
| ✓ Named multi-role support team, per its site | ✗ Reviewers describe termination fees when leaving |
| ✓ Long PEO history through Oasis | ✗ No PEO-specific G2 or Capterra listing found |

#4 Insperity – A Full-Service PEO
Insperity suits owners who’ve already decided co-employment is right for them. Clients get a dedicated implementation specialist during setup and an ongoing PEO service team after that. Its historical sweet spot is companies that have outgrown informal HR but haven’t built an HR department.
Growth tends to be where it pinches. Review aggregators point to premium, rising costs and rigid administrative processes, and some reviewers say service thins out after onboarding, depending on the team you’re assigned. On G2, it holds about 3.9/5, with an 8.0/10 Quality of Support score.
| Strengths | Considerations |
| ✓ Dedicated implementation specialist | ✗ G2 rating of about 3.9/5 |
| ✓ Ongoing PEO service team | ✗ G2 Quality of Support score of 8.0/10 |
| ✓ Fits companies without an HR department | ✗ Reviewers cite rising costs and rigid processes |
#5 TriNet – PEO or HR Service, Your Choice
TriNet dates back to 1988 and offers two ways in. TriNet PEO is a co-employment arrangement, while TriNet HR Plus is an ASO service that skips co-employment. Both come in industry bundles for fields like technology, finance and nonprofits, and some reviewers praise its benefits and insurance offerings.
The reviews get rougher elsewhere. Capterra reviewers call the interface clunky, one says customer support is definitely their weakness, and account-rep continuity comes up as a recurring gripe. TriNet sits at 3.9/5 on Capterra across 145 reviews.
| Strengths | Considerations |
| ✓ Choice of PEO or ASO model | ✗ Trustpilot score of 1.4/5 across 124 reviews |
| ✓ Industry-specific HR bundles | ✗ Reviewers report limited workflow customization |
| ✓ Some reviewers praise its benefits offerings | ✗ Account-rep continuity described as inconsistent |

Frequently Asked Questions
For hourly or multi-location employers, Netchex is the strongest overall fit. You get payroll, time, HR and benefits without co-employment, the same company builds the software and answers the phone, and 90% of calls get picked up in under a minute. If you want to stay in a certified PEO, compare ADP TotalSource and Paychex PEO.
Usually because they want to leave co-employment behind. As a company grows, owners often want to choose their own benefits and broker, keep employees on their own books, and have time tracking and payroll in one native system. Others simply want to compare PEOs before a renewal to see which service model fits best.
A PEO makes sense when you have no HR staff and want a co-employer carrying compliance and benefits work. As you add people and locations, you may want more control over plans, data and costs. HR software with strong service, like Netchex, keeps you the only employer while still giving you a team to call.
Ask each vendor whether you’ll be a co-employer, who answers when payroll breaks, and whether you can keep your own benefits broker. Find out how benefits, workers’ comp and tax accounts move back under your name, and get the timeline in writing. Check independent reviews, not just testimonials a company publishes about itself.
