You run a small manufacturing shop outside Jackson, and a neighbor at the chamber of commerce swears by the PEO that handles her payroll and benefits. You look them up. People Lease has been around since the 80s, the BBB gives them an A+, and the pitch sounds simple: hand off the HR paperwork, keep running the shop. Then you start wondering who actually employs your people once you sign. If you’re comparing Netchex vs. People Lease, that question is the whole comparison.
People Lease is a professional employer organization. It becomes a co-employer of your staff. Netchex isn’t a PEO at all. It builds its own payroll, time, HR and benefits platform, backs it with its own support team, and leaves you as the only employer.
Last updated: September 2026. People Lease information comes from the company’s own website and public listings. Netchex figures come from G2 and Netchex’s own customer data.
The Short Version
People Lease’s About page says the company staked out “a leadership role in 1984 by creating the employee leasing industry in Mississippi,” crediting Jackson businessman Larry Lewis. It’s based in Ridgeland, part of the Jackson metro area, and its affiliations page lists NAPEO, the American Payroll Association, SHRM and E-Verify. The Better Business Bureau lists People Lease as an A+ accredited business, a member since 1989 and accredited since 2007, with zero complaints closed in the last three years. Forty years in one state’s PEO market is a real track record, and that BBB history backs it up.
Netchex was founded in Louisiana more than 20 years ago for the businesses that keep America running: restaurants, hotels, dealerships, clinics. There’s no co-employment. The US-based, FPC-certified support team picks up 90% of calls in under a minute, customers rate that service 4.8 out of 5, and Netchex holds an 8.9/10 Quality of Support score on G2.

Netchex vs. People Lease on Payroll and Time
People Lease’s service list covers payroll and tax filing, expense management, time and attendance, onboarding, background checks and performance management. Client logins point to payroll.prosoftware.com, and that vendor, ProSoftware, describes its PRO platform as combining payroll, benefits administration, time and attendance, performance management and expense management for PEOs and ASOs. So the software running behind People Lease comes from a separate company that builds it for PEOs across the country.
That’s a real difference from Netchex. Time and attendance is native here, not a module bought from an outside platform vendor. Scheduler sits in the same system as payroll, so a shift swap or a stretch of overtime lands in the pay run without a handoff between products. OneScreen Payroll pulls onboarding, overtime, benefits and taxes into one readiness view, and most teams wrap up a run in under 15 minutes. Multiple locations or EINs? One login covers all of them.
| Feature | Netchex | People Lease |

HR, Benefits and the Co-Employment Question
This is where the real decision sits. People Lease’s site leans hard into benefits scale, telling small employers they can “go toe-to-toe with Fortune 500 companies through competitive benefits offerings.” That’s the classic PEO pitch, and for a business too small to negotiate its own group rates, pooled buying power is a genuine draw. Its service list also covers onboarding, background checks, performance management and an HR support center, so a business with no HR staff at all gets a lot handed to it at once.
The trade-off is structural, not a knock on People Lease specifically. In co-employment, the PEO becomes a legal employer alongside you, and your benefits run through its pooled programs. Some owners are glad to have that taken off their plate. Others want to choose their own plan, keep their own broker, and keep their people on their own books.
Netchex is built for that second group. With its in-house benefits solution, enrollment, ACA tracking, onboarding and Netchex Recruit share one employee record, so a new hire gets entered once instead of typed into three systems. Netchex also works directly with your CPA and the benefits broker you already trust.
Seasonal and hourly staff make ACA tricky to track by hand. ACA Central watches hours and coverage offers across full-time, part-time and seasonal employees, and Netchex files Forms 1094-C and 1095-C. (See the IRS reporting rules for applicable large employers for what’s required.)
One honest note: Netchex isn’t a PEO, so it can’t offer the pooled, large-group benefits rates a PEO negotiates across its whole client base. If that scale is the deciding factor for your business, a PEO is the right comparison to make.
| Netchex | People Lease | |
| Employment model | No co-employment, you stay the only employer | Co-employment through a PEO |
| Benefits | In-house benefits solution, or keep your own broker | Large-group benefits access, per its site |
| IRS CPEO status | Not applicable; Netchex isn’t a PEO | Not listed on the IRS’s public CPEO list, per our research |
Service and Support
People Lease leans on longevity and local presence. A customer quoted on its site puts it plainly.
People Lease is the best in their field! Excellent customer service with quick response time to all questions and concerns.
– Jenna Tupman, via People Lease’s website
Between the BBB accreditation, the SOC certification listed on its affiliations page and four decades in one market, People Lease has built the kind of reputation that’s hard to fake in a small state where word travels fast.
Netchex runs support differently, because there’s no PEO layer and no outside platform vendor to route a ticket through. The company that writes the software also answers the phone. Ninety percent of calls get picked up in under a minute with first-call resolution, and every customer has a dedicated Account Manager.
Netchex has the best support of any service provider I’ve ever worked with. There aren’t any hoops to jump through with Netchex support.
– Mary Lang, Accounting and Financial Control Director, Atlanta Air Charter
Implementation and Switching
Leaving a PEO isn’t a plain software swap. Benefits, workers’ comp and tax accounts all have to move back under your own name, so timing around a benefits renewal matters more than it would with a straight payroll switch.
Netchex implementation is free and project-managed, usually about six weeks, with free data imports and a 96% implementation satisfaction score. One team stays with you from the first data pull to the first live payroll.
We didn’t find a published implementation timeline on the People Lease pages we read. If you’re signing on, ask for one in writing, and ask what unwinding the co-employment relationship looks like down the road.
Who Each Is Built For
People Lease may fit if: you’re a small or midsize Mississippi business with no in-house HR, you want a long-tenured local PEO to take on payroll, benefits and compliance work, and pooled large-group benefits rates matter more to you than staying the sole employer.
Netchex may fit if: you run hourly or multi-location teams, you want to stay the only employer, choose your own benefits and broker, and have one company accountable for both the platform and the support. Comparing other national names too? See Netchex vs. Paychex and Netchex vs. ADP.

Netchex isn’t a PEO. It builds its own HR and payroll platform, and your business stays the only employer of your people.
Our research didn’t find People Lease on the IRS’s public list of certified PEOs (CPEOs), and its own site doesn’t state that certification. Netchex isn’t a PEO at all, so it doesn’t offer CPEO protections either. If IRS certification is what you’re after, check a provider’s status directly against the IRS list.
